Special Events

LSU New Music Festival

The Louisiana School of Music will hold its Festival of Contemporary Music February 25-28 immediately preceeding the 2008 South Central-Southern SuperRegional Conference. Conference attendees are welcome to arrive early and take part in the Festival. Information will be posted here soon.

Bang on a Can on Thursday Evening, February 28

Bang on a Can All Stars will be the featured ensemble during the LSU Festival of Contemporary Music. Their residency will feature composer/founder Julia Wolfe, composer jazz clarinet and saxophonist Don Byron, and singer/violinist Iva Bittova. Formed in 1987 by composers Michael Gordon, David Lang and Julia Wolfe, Bang on a Can is dedicated to commissioning, performing, creating, presenting and recording contemporary music. With an ear for the new, the unknown and the unconventional, Bang on a Can strives to expose exciting and innovative music as broadly and accessibly as possible to new audiences worldwide. And through its Summer Festival, Bang on a Can hopes to bring this energy and passion for innovation to a younger generation of composers and players.

CMS conference attendees are welcome to attend the ensemble’s marathon concert scheduled for Thursday evening, February 28, beginning at 6:00 p.m. in LSU’s Union Theatre. The performance will be six hours (or so) and attendees can enter and leave as they wish. Tickets are $25 and may be ordered on the conference registration form. For more information on Bang on a Can, see http://www.bangonacan.org.

Gala Saturday Conference Luncheon

A special conference luncheon will be held on Saturday, March 1, and will feature keynote speaker Donna T. Emmanuel (University of North Texas). The menu includes Chicken Louisiane and a vegetarian option. Tickets are $15 and may be ordered on the conference registration form. Don’t miss this opportunity to greet old friends and meet new ones!
